Using acetate and found paper, Jemison produces mixed media works that draw attention to their status as arbitrary and accidental. Building on part of her larger Affirmations for Living Series, Jemison’s edition depicts a mantra entitled “If I Could” scribed by the artist’s fourteen-year old cousin as a personal inspirational text written in the present conditional shortly before he fell victim to a shooting in Chicago. “Affirmations for Living,” referred to in the edition title, was a text originally published as the prologue to a street fiction novel that she discovered in 2009. Jemison’s edition is made by layering a print of his inspirational text over a gessoed support with paper collage, making it an image that is never truly stabilized or complete.
