So I Went To A Place
Jun 4 - Jul 9, 2016
Opening reception Saturday, June 4, 6-9pm
LAXART is pleased to present So I Went to a Place, an exhibition of around 200 paintings by Joshua Aster. Painting on 14 3/4-inch x 11 3/4-inch birch panels, Aster creates a structural system of abstraction that seem to plot individual points in an immersive, graph-like installation. Each painting seems engaged in a formal play exploring color theory, crossfading, line weight, layering, movement, synesthesia, and memory. Often painted outdoors, some works trace the moving light and the edges of shadows from three-dimensional objects. In this way, the abstractions become impressions or recordings of specific times and places with colors influenced by those locales. Titles of these works are poetic and lyrical, such as gyroscopic equilibrium; little conversations in the grass; seismic backgammon; and raspberry quilt.
